Introduction           
In 1995 when National Chi Nan University is founded, Professor Pi-twan Huang established Language Teaching and Research Center and was in charge of establishing a new department. On August 1, 1996, the Department of Foreign Languages and Literature was inaugurated, when the first class of 33 students was enrolled. Since then, the Department has been moving forward and, presently, recruits 60 students per year. 
        The Graduate Institution was established in 1999. Our objectives are to cultivate experts in English and American literature, world literature, critical theory, literary translation, and translation studies, expect to train specialists in linguistic analysis and language teaching. 
 
Distinguishing Features
1. The Department of Foreign Languages and Literature intends:
    ●To enhance student’s language proficiency. In addition to reading, writing, and oral 
       expression, we also emphasize on the training of translation.
    ●To equip students with the ability to speak and understand a second foreign language.
    ●To offer an insight into the linguistics.
    ●To enable students to critically analyze, interpret, and evaluate literary works.
    ●To enable students to develop a deeper understanding and appreciation of literature
      and cultural differences.
2. A low student-faculty ratio.
3. Literature, Linguistics, and Applied English are three main programs designed for the
   undergraduates. The curriculum of second foreign languages includes Japanese, 
   French, Spanish, and German.
 
Faculty
        We have 10 regular faculty members of foreign Ph.D. background.
 
Career Opportunities
        Apart from studying further in literature or linguistics, our graduates of degree programs have pursued a great span of opportunities and career, ranging from teaching in schools at all levels to literally all professions that require fluent English or other foreign languages, such as journalism, news anchors, media industry, translators, interpreters, foreign affairs, aviation industry and many more. In addition, many alumni of the Department are in charge of sales, account, personnel affairs, marketing communications, or management in enterprises or governmental agencies.
